"Grandpa's Tractor" is the first in a series of paintings that reflect my memories of growing up on Sand Mountain, the Land I Love.
This painting is of the bluff as viewed from my Mama's front porch and was painted in memory of my brother, Thomas L. Smith whom we lost this year. Tommy loved the farmland that our grandpa settled and was the son who stayed with the land.
I remember the year sixteen year old Tommy planted a corn patch as an FFA project and in the dry summer heat, it so needed rain. Every afternoon we would watch a summer shower go up that bluff leaving his corn patch dry. On one of those afternoons, he suddenly began jumping up and down on the porch, mimicking thunder and saying "he was going to bring the clouds this way". Mama gently told him " The Lord decides where the rain goes". It must have rained because the last memory of that corn patch was sitting on top of the corn in daddy's creaking big farm wagon as we brought it down the road to the...
